Planning Ahead

Some days, I go through the day thinking about what I’m going to write. Even before this project, I’d come up with little paragraphs and random sentences of things I want/wanted to say. Today is not one of those days.

We’re a little in whirlwind mode over here, as we get ready to leave for vacation in a couple days. I’m making lots of random lists, then ripping them out of notebooks and adding more things to the notes section of my phone, before promptly crossing out what I’ve done. I also may be known to add things I’ve already done to that list just so I can cross it off. I’m such a cliché, I know.

When I used to go to Italy as a kid, and then as a teenager, I distinctly remember going with my mom to Caldor’s or Bradlee’s to stock up on shampoo and body wash and—since it was vacation, after all—the things I’d never normally get, like fancy shave gel and new makeup. I was really living on the edge.

But I think that stuck with me a bit, and I’m always looking to make sure I have all the things before we go anywhere, as if they don't have the same five stores we go to here everywhere else in the country. So this week I’ve been getting everything together—the swim diapers and the shampoo, the stickers and the coloring books for the car ride, the magazines I haven’t read yet and the books I hope to get through. They’re all piled up in the guest room, waiting for sometime after 7pm tomorrow, when I’ll actually get to packing everything up.

I’m looking forward to a week off, if nothing more than to have a quick reset.

In the meantime though, I took a break tonight to go to yoga with Karen and Christina. To make muffins with Luca, and to sit on the couch at 11pm and write. It’s good, this taking the time to write. Even if I hadn't thought about it beforehand.
